A new Byrds
Box Set has just been released by Sony.
It’s called
The Complete Columbia Albums
Collection.
The box houses 13
CDs in 11 cardboard sleeves (replicas of the original
vinyl covers) (11 singles and 2 gatefolds – Sweetheart Of The Rodeo Legacy
Edition (2 CDs) and Untiltled / Unissued (2 CDs)).
Some of the covers are actual scans of used LPs, as one can clearly notice
ringwear on the back.
The CDs are the remastered versions first issued in the 90s with bonus
tracks.
There also is a 40 page booklet with all recording details (musicians,
dates, etc…) and track-by-track comments.
Nothing new, but a nice object for completist collectors.

From Byrds Collector Whin Oppice:
CALL FOR RECORDINGS AND YOUR ATTENDANCE
I am
thinking about organizing a Gene Clark Unreleased Recordings Listening Symposium
to be held in Kansas City this fall.
It would be
an opportunity to share our musical treasures with fellow collectors whom most
of us have never met. All are welcome.
No recording
devices allowed in the meeting room. Collectors can present their unreleased
Gene recordings, enjoy the camaraderie and ensuing discussions by all in
attendance.
To fill out
the bill, Dan Torchia of Kansas City will be available to give an overview of
his documentary on young Gene Clark before the formation of The Byrds.
How does the idea appeal to you? Write me at folkrock65@yahoo.com.
I need to evaluate how much interest there might be.
Thanks - Whin Oppice

NOTE: part of this description is based on a text we found on a major retailer website.
There are some errors that we will correct as soon as possible. For instance,
The Byrds did not record nor appear live on german TV in October 1972. By this
time, John Guerin had replaced Gene Parsons as the band's drummer, and that
lineup never visited Europe.

Gene Clark's 1977 album
Two Sides To Every Story
to be re-released on CD at last in June 2011.
= Byrds Flyght's Long Box CD - Long Out Of
Print!!!
Received
from
Gene Clark's son
Kai Clark:
Hello
everyone!!!
High Moon
Records will be re-releasing my father's album "Two Sides To Every Story" with
the release date set to be sometime in June.
This is great
news as "Two Sides To Every Story" is one of the rarest Gene Clark albums to
find on CD, or at all for that matter. This will be the first time it has been
released on CD in almost 20 years!!!
There will be
a launch party on April 29th at the Roxy theatre in Los Angeles where I will be
performing the album in its entirety with my band and also other Gene Clark
gems. There will be some very special guests (some of who will be joining me on
stage) at this event. Also performing will be remaining members of Love,
performing their never released album "Black Beauty" album. Please go to my site
to find more information and links.
The
DESERT ROSE BAND is reuniting again on
August 28, 2011 for a concert at The Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Chatfield,
Colorado.

A big influence on the country-era

Starbyrd’s
new CD « Return Of A Starbyrd » has now been released.
Byrds fans
won’t be disappointed, as the recordings are filled with HPS’ Rickenbacker 12
string guitar familiar sound.
All details about how to purchase the CD are available by writing to Horst-Peter
at
Starbyrd@t-online.de
Extract
from the Liner Notes:
What
better way to begin a New Year than to celebrate the release of Starbyrd’s
second CD titled Return Of A Starbyrd – another folk-rock tour de force centered
around the talents of singer / songwriter Horst-Peter Schmidt supported by a
couple of fine musicians. Fans of Starbyrd will recognize Schmidt’s trademark
Rickenbacker 370RM 12-string play on many of the tracks, while some of the more
introspective songs feature a lighter acoustic touch. All of the songs on this
disc are original Schmidt tunes – enhancing his oeuvre and making him one of the
most prolific songwriters in his genre of music (….). Put this disc in rotation
with The Byrds, The Eagles and Crosby, Stills & Nash and you will quickly
realize that Starbyrd has added a fresh veneer to the rich tapestry of classic
pop/rock music (….).
Eric
Sorensen, “Jangle On!” Columnist
As promised
earlier, here are some comments made by Horst-Peter himself about the songs.
In
Into The NightI tried to follow up to what the Byrds
began in Notorious Byrd Brothers: Sound
effects,
spacey harmonies etc...
Candlelight is my
25th-anniversary-celebration-song dedicated to my wife.
Cruising
In The Midnight Sun is about our North
Atlantic cruise last July. What I like most about the song is the three
different guitar solos played of the Gretsch Falcon, Epiphone Les Paul and the
6-string Rick.
With This
Song, Summer
Of Love, Face Of The Clown and
Fall From Grace(the latter inspired
by the sound of the Byrds 5D album) have been in the vaults for years and
finally materialized.
Big Wheel
is about life in general and growing older.
Leave My
Homewas inspired by the David Crosby - Jackson
Browne dispute about "Wooden Ships" (background: Crosby's
utopian escape to some unknown paradise after a nuclear war. This song inspired
Jackson Browne to write his For
Everyman. )
Rock All
Night is an authentic song about a friend
of mine who did everything possible to play music in a hard rock band but
finally failed.
Oil On My
Skin (in my view the "most byrdsy song")
about the Shell disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
Home Sweet
Home Cologne - well at last I have
written a song about my hometown. I've been to so many places in the world but
it always felt good to come back home. So this song is my homage to MY city.

Francesco Lucarelli
just released his CD titled
FIND THE LIGHT.
Here's what
Francesco
(Byrds
and
CSNY
fan) wrote to us :
"I'm proud to tell you I have just released my own album: it's called Find The
Light, and it's my tribute to the glorious music & musicians of the early 70's
California singer-songwriters scene.
I didn't want to hide my influences on it. I'd rather wanted to make clear where
I come from. Sort of my way to say thank you to all the ones who inspired me to
write songs and make music. Like I paid my dues and now I'm ready to go my own
way. So you will hear what you expect on it.
Find The Light features some special guests (like Graham Nash) and wonderful
musicians (Kenny Passarelli, Jeff Pevar, James Raymond, etc...). And some very
talented friends, too, like Bill Kaffenberger,
playing his Rickenbacker.
Stephen Barncard masterfully mixed it, giving the album the 70's feel and sound
I was looking for, and Dave Zimmer wrote beautiful liner notes.
The album has been mastered in Nashville and printed in the UK.
The complete website will be up and running with more info, audio clips, stories
and pictures in the coming weeks.

On this day, the 40th anniversary of
Jimi Hendrix'
death, the time is right to quote this story told by
Gene Parsons
:
"One night when we were playing
at The Whiskey and we were in the dressing room,
this really well dressed
black man wearing a feather in his hat walks in and says "Are You Clarence
White? And Clarence says "Yeah". The fellow adds: "I've been listening to you
for years, and you're one of my favorite players". So Clarence says, "Wow,
thanks a lot, and what did you say your name was?" The fellow says, "I'm Jimi
Hendrix"

Something
very special happened at a
Long Players with Bill Lloyd /
Desert Rose Band
concert last week.
Here, lifted
from the Byrdmaniax Yahoo List, is
"Wild" Bill Cody's review of the event.
This would have been every DRB Fans delight! It was an
absolutely beautiful day up in the high country of Colorado, except for a
little wind. The crowd was suprisingly sparse, maybe 300+ people? The DRB did
their soundcheck at approx 10am...and they sounded GREAT! They all looked
relaxed and refreshed; I guess that high country Colorado air will do that to
you.
Now here's the thing....as most of you know, the first group up
"The Long Players with Bill Lloyd" was going to perform the "Sweetheart of the
Rodeo" album in its entirety, Chris Hillman was scheduled to perform it with
them, since he was one of the original Byrds that put that historic album
together. Well, I'm watching the stage and notice that J.D.Maness (who played
pedal steel on the original Sweetheart album) was setting up. Then John
Jorgeson appears on stage, tuning a number of instruments. Herb Petersen then
walks up with a banjo and is testing a mike....WHAT...ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Chris Hillman then takes the stage, the lame announcer this day
introduces the Long Players and says that Chris, J.D., John and Herb would be
joining in....GET OUTTA HERE!!! So they kick it off with "You Ain't Going
Nowhere" with the genius of the DRB front and center, the only thing that
would have made this better would have been to see Roger McGuinn walk out
onstage with his signature Rickenbacker 12 string; unfortunately Roger wasn't
there. The DRB then performed the entire album, and you could tell they hadn't
practiced at all, because after a couple of verses on nearly every song Chris
would say..."who wants to do a lead?" John or J.D. or both of them would break
into some incredible leads, even Herb would break in with a lead on his banjo
or Chris would dive into a searing lead on his mandolin. The harmonies were
incredible. Whoever the Long Players were, they pretty much were in the
background as the Desert Rose Band performed "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". What a
great feeling knowing that they then would be back up on stage a little more
than an hour later for the "last" DRB Show EVER!
After a memorable rendition of this incredible historic album
(the first Country Rock album ever produced), the guys got off the stage and
made way for Radney Foster (who invited Chris up to play on a number of
tunes). Then the stage belonged to Richie Furay and his group.....it was
indeed a "Good Feelin' To Know" that the DRB would be next.
At approx 4:10pm, the DRB took the stage and didn't disappoint.
Even though I had no paper and pen to write down each and every song, it was
an extended playlist that featured every DRB tune imaginable. The harmonies
were heavenly as were the instrumentals. I was awestruck, sitting on one of
the most beautiful places on God's Great Earth, seeing one of the greatest
groups ever. It wasn't until near the end of the show that a sadness grew in
my heart, knowing this could very well be the LAST TIME they ever perform
together again! When the group hit the first few notes of "The Price I Pay" I
knew this was it. John put together one of the most memorable leads I have
ever witnessed on this tune!
After the show, everyone was accessable behind the stage, I
asked John about all the guitars he lost in the Nashville flood and it nearly
brought a tear to his eye, as he reinterated the devastation. I then asked him
point blank...."Is this it for DRB"? He said with a wink and a smile...."You
never know" as he was whisked away in a golf cart.
All in all a most memorable experience, those that were there
were treated to an incredible and most memorable show ever AND to top it
off....it was FREE!!!

Silver Meteor
(with
Clarence White
and
Gene Parsons) released for the first
time on CD (with bonus tracks) by
Sierra Records.
"SILVER METEOR - A PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY ANTHOLOGY" was originally released on
Sierra LP in 1980 to rave reviews.
The 12 classic selections were highlighted by Clarence White's four
recordings for his planned 1973 solo album, an album he never completed.
Hear all those original 12 tracks on this compact disc plus an additional 14
bonus tracks that were planned for a Volume Two back in early 80s but never
released, including rare, sometimes unreleased recordings by the Country
Gazette, Paul Siebel, Michael Dinner, Rick Cunha, Ian Matthews, Red Rhodes,
etc...
These bonus tracks include backup performances by Clarence White, Linda
Ronstadt, Herb Pedersen, Sneaky Pete and many artists from those early
"country-rock" days in L.A.
Even Gram Parsons is saluted with two of his songs performed by the Country
Gazette and with the closing song by "The Mystery Band" on a terrific
performance of Gram's "One Hundred Years From Now".
Truly, the artists and songs speak for themselves!
Voted by the UK magazine "UNCUT" as the 11th "Greatest Lost Album" of all
time, it is no longer lost but still GREAT!
Original Tracks:
Clarence White - NEVER ENDING LOVE / LAST THING ON MY MIND / ALABAMA JUBILEE

An obscure treasure,
Roland White's 1976 solo album 'I
Wasn't Born To Rock 'N Roll',
originally issued on the
Ridge Runner Records label, is
re-mastered from the original tapes and released for the very first time on CD.
Roland White
, along with his brother
Clarence White, made bluegrass and
country music history as members of
The Kentucky Colonels.
Roland
also played in
Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys
and
Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass, and
later in
Country Gazette and
The Nashville Bluegrass Band.
Clarence
famously played with
The Byrds, among many others, until
his tragic death in 1973.
This album features
Alan Munde,
Kenny Wertz,
Roger Bush and
Dave Ferguson playing traditional
tunes, as well as a composition called "Powder
Creek", co-written by
Roland
Clarence.
This was the first appearance of this special tune on an album, a song which
Roland now describes as having been
composed with his brother on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1963!
The package includes original liner notes by
Gene Parsons (The
Byrds), new reflections from
Roland, original album artwork, and
one unreleased bonus track not included on the original LP!

Horst-Peter Schmidt
(Byrds-influenced artist from Germany -
"The Crown Prince of The Rickenbacker 12 String Guitar")
has just released a new CD called
Phoenix.
Byrds / Rickenbacker / McGuinn fans won't be disappointed!!!
The Crown Prince of 12-String Guitar, Horst-Peter Schmidt, has returned from
his musical sabbatical to treat pop fans to another janglefest of twelve new
tunes that build on his Byrds-inspired legacy. Horst-Peter channels Roger
McGuinn effortlessly through his Rickenbacker 12-string play and his vocals. The
eleven tracks on Phoenix are original songs that draw on Horst-Peter’s varied
personal observations. The opening track, “Another Day Without You”, is a song
about his Rickenbacker 370RM 12-string guitar – which went unplayed for too long
a period. This autobiographical tone is repeated in songs like Catch Me When I
Fall - a song dedicated to his wife Uta - and You’ll Show Me The Way, a
retrospective of Horst-Peter’s musical career. Other songs capture the spirit of
60s folk-rock by lamenting the current poor state of German education, the
troubled global situation, the environment and Trail of Tears, a song rooted in
American history, as interpreted by a German songwriter. In spite of these
melancholy song themes, Horst-Peter retains his positive perspective and
optimism as evidenced by City of the Angels and the climactic You’ll Show Me The
Way. Just as Turn! Turn! Turn! gave hope to a conflicted generation in the 60s,
the songs on Phoenix give hope to contemporary listeners. We have a troubadour
from Cologne, Germany and his Rickenbacker 12-string guitar to thank for this
chiming call for a brighter, better tomorrow.

From Bill:
"This is to announce the new Bill
Kaffenberger heavily Byrds-influenced digital download folk and folk-rock
release "Looking Back Then Looking Ahead" available at CD Baby for only $ 8
USD.
For this new release, I have picked the 14
best songs from my old releases that have the most Byrds/Rickenbacker
influence. They have all been remixed and remastered and most are alternate
takes that feature added or different Rickenbacker parts, added drums, added
harmony vocals and so forth.
In addition, there are 3 bonus tracks
consisting of all new Rickenbacker-influenced original recordings.
For those wishing to purchase only individual
tracks, particularly the new ones, they will be available at the usual
online download sites starting in about three to four weeks."

Someone once told me that my « Recommended Albums » page
only referred to my friends’ releases, no matter what the quality was. Not so.
All the albums I put on this page, I really like them.
Such is the case for this CD, although both main performers
(Ron Martin and Marco Zanzi) are indeed « virtual » friends of mine.
This CD can only appeal to Byrds fans, as both Ron and
Marco are heavily influenced by The Byrds. (harmony vocals, 12 string guitar,
mandolin, Parsons-White stringbender…).
Although I hate the term « Country Rock », I can find no
other way to label this excellent album. File under « Desert Rose Band / Flying
Burrito Brothers » musical style.

Gene Clark on The
Flying Burrito Brothers' version of Tried So Hard : the end of a myth.
We just received the following article from Jean-Pierre
Morisset :
As far
back as january 1975, in my very first article on Gene Clark published in ZigZag
issue # 49, I wrote:
'Gene played a few gigs with The Flying Burrito
Bros who had just lost Gram Parsons during the summer (1970), and at one point
it was believed that Clark was going to become a permanent member of the group.
But of course he didn't; the only result of this short-lived alliance was the
Burritos' recording of Clark's "Tried So Hard" as their next single, with Gene
singing the bass part of the back-up vocals ...'
Years
later, in issue # 39/40 of Bucketfull Of Brains dated march 1992, I even added:
'... in a version different from the one that
was later used on the Burritos' third album where Gene's voice was replaced by
Rick Roberts.'
Owning
the rare A&M single "Tried So Hard" and having listened to it very carefully
with headphones, I was sure to have identified a bass vocal which in my mind
could only be Gene's voice, following his involvment with the Burritos' GP-less
quartet during the summer of 1970. But unfortunately it's
not the case !
After
almost thirty eight years of belief, I finally asked Chris Hillman to confirm
Gene's presence on that single. And here's what Chris wrote me:
'Gene was not on the Burritos' recording of
"Tried So Hard": he didn't sing any harmonies on the song. In fact, as good of a
lead singer as Gene was, he couldn't sing parts or alternate harmonies. Gene
sang lead on "Here Tonight" by the Burritos, which was released later on a
compilation album.'
Returning to my archives after this historical point was cleared by Hillman, I
finally found out that Rick Roberts had joined the FBB not in september after
the recording session for the single, but in august, in time for the recording
of the song, which was rush-released in october 1970, before a tour of Europe by
The Flying Burrito Bros' new five-men line-up. Why his high voice can't be heard
on the recording is unclear: maybe producer Jim Dickson purposedly choose not to
mix Rick's harmonies upfront, as he was not familiar with the newcomer's voice.
Anyway, another take the song was used on the Burritos' third LP released in may
1971, with Rick's high voice more prominent: had Jim Dickson in between realized
the potential of such a harmony singer ? Maybe.

Journey cannot really do justice to the wealth of melodic songs, upbeat
tunes and powerful ballads that Horst-Peter has composed during his career, but
this collection of songs is certainly a superb “snapshot” of his body of work.
Once you have absorbed the music on this compilation, I believe that you will
desire to hear more from the artist I have nicknamed “The Crown Prince of
Twelve-String.” I stand in envy of his talent, and I remain grateful that he
has added a sparkling codex of songs to the indie music scene. I am confident
that when I pull Horst-Peter’s music off my shelf in the future, his songs will
possess the same timeless and endearing qualities that the music of the Byrds,
the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Eagles, Tom Petty and CSNY have today."

HPS'
partner in Starbyd, GAT,
will also release a compilation of his previous works this month (december
2006):
'Then To Now', the
new GAT CD, is ready for release and will be
available to buy in December 2006.
'Then To Now' is a
collection of songs from 1999 right up to the present day. If you missed out on
getting hold of the 'Coloured Blue' & 'Moving
On' CD's, then this new CD by GAT is what
you need. Included on the CD are also four tracks taken from the
Starbyrd CD 'On The Other
Side Of Mad' which GAT participated in, as
well as a newly recorded song.
16 tracks in all, this CD will be well worth
having.
Bill
writes his own songs, plays a 12 string Rickenbacker, and his output is very Byrds-sounding.
From Bill:
My new CD is finally here! "Jingle Jangle
Morning", 17 songs, MOST with a lot of Rickenbacker 12 String, all very very
Byrds-like, I wrote all but three songs, of those three one is a folk song
cover, one was written by a friend, and I covered Gene Clark/Jessie Davis'
"With Tomorrow". If you want a preview, you can go to my MySpace link (see
below) and two of the songs (Jingle Jangle Morning and Who Are All These
People) are there in full as a preview.
The CD
will be available on CD Baby, Not Lame Recordings, Jam Recordings and Kool
Kat Music web sites within about two weeks or so. It will also be available
in the UK from Heyday Mail Order eventually but not sure how long before
they will have it.
