The General Loison was replaced in his command of Westphalia by Canuel. It(he) was from then on, called to Stettin to command(order) the direction(management) of Kolberg's seat.
On February 1-st, 1807, it(he) took its(his) capacities for the future attack of the strengthened place which was initially defended(forbidden) by Nettelbeck. Ninety details(rooms) of artillery defended(forbade) her(it). As the Frenchmen approached, the hirelings and the inhabitants got ready for a long-term seat.
Five in April after an extensive bombardment, one of the commanders(majors) Prussian said:
" If it continues, we should soon give in "
But Nettelbeck answered:
" Citizens, the moment came to show what we have in us "
And taking out the sword he said:
" The first one who speaks of rÈddition, I would kill him(it) "
On April 29 the commander(major) was replaced by Gneisenau. This last one had a plan: never give respites to the besiegers.
It was a hard seat and it(he) had become more difficult for defenders because the Frenchmen crawled close.
The garrison, however, had increased 1 ' 000 - 6 ' 000 men(people) .De these 6 ' brave 000 more than 2 ' 000 should be killed or hurt(damaged). One could hardly find a house with an intact stone floor(window-pane) when an armistice was announced on July 3, 1807.
On June 25, Napoleon and Frederick Wilhelm had signed a cessation of hostilities. French has never taken into account an it. On the contrary they even made(did) attempts, more drove to despair, to take the fortress.
Gneisenau had made(done) the soldiers, with the little promising material and he had found the free citizens and the troops of garrison decided has to go to the end to protect their freedom. And and so in front of Loison's doggedness, these men(people) became heroes.
This heroism, of Kolberg's town, in oriental Prussia on the rib(coast) the Baltic had symbolized the heroism of common Germans in front of the invader. Kolberg was always in the Prussian hands when the war was finished.
At the end of the year, the General Loison joined the army of the Gironde under the orders of the Marshal Junot, not without leaving indÈlÈbiles tracks of his passage in Prussia. In December it(he) would leave for Salamanca and for its(his) exploits in Portugal.
