The name Army Of Lovers is evidence that Army Of Lovers thought about what they do. Or was the name just a lucky shot? Hard to tell! Fact is that there are several opinions: Maria von Praunheim wrote an erotic book called "Armee des Liebhaber" which was the base for the seventies movie "Army Of Lovers"; the historical Alexander the Great had an army called "Army Of Soldiers"; and off course the documentary about homosexuals from 1978 titled "Army Of Lovers".
In an interview Army Of Lovers answered in 2001 on the question: "The name comes from a movie about german transvestites in Berlin. We thought the name suited us well and the director of the german movie thought it was all right for us to use it."

But there is a certain truth behind their name; Army Of Lovers were an army; an army for all lovers in the world. They wanted equal rights for homosexuals, they said that promiscuity shouldn't be a problem, but their most important goal in life was fighting for personal freedom. When in 1992 the question about aids came up, Jean-Pierre answered: "Not a free lifestyle, but irresponsable behaviour increases the risk of being infected".
Another word can be said about the design, which changed everytime they released a CD. Marie Sundström-Wollbeck, responsible for the sleeve design, started with a bold and simple font and ended with a very calligraphical one. The 'kidnap'-font from the 'King Midas' single came from Fredrik Boklund. Army Of Lovers were a dynamic band who kept evolving. And that change makes Army Of Lovers big.

The name may sound very stylish, not a lot of people remember Army Of Lovers by their name. You got to refer to 'Extravagant dressed people with the ladies with big...' or 'Crucified'. One way or the other, people always remember Army Of Lovers, and that's very special for a band who made 'simple' dance-and popmusic. Where other bands had to move mountains to get a second of attention and than fall back in oblivion, Army Of Lovers always got the attention. Maybe with their return they'll have more respect.
