Holidays in Poland: Wroclaw and Cracow, june 2008:
astronomical observatories
Cracow obs, Radio Antennas Cracow Obs, Dome of 0.5m Cass Cracow Obs, Maria Kurpinska with 0.5m Cass Wroclaw Obs, main building Prof Andrzej Pigulski with 20cm Clark refractor Jerzy Speil, " earthquaker"
The antenna in the back suffered from bad tracking and is now used as a transit instrument. The antenna in the foreground is used by students for solar observing Maria Kurpinska is a 'leading lady' in the field of eclipsing binary stars. She is using this 0.5m Cassegrain telescope,
equipped with a ccd camera for her obervations of these stars. This building contains a dome with an old Clarc refractor.
Also, on the second floor-balcony is a small refractor for
solar observing, mounted in a roll-off shed. The 20 cm refractor is in very good condition and is
often used for public viewing of the moon and planets. Dr Jerzy Speil works at the Institute of Geophysics and monitors earthquakes all over the world, as part of a global network. He is also an active visual observer of variable stars!
