How and when did you guys met?
At school, at the age of 15 or so... Alain was the skaterboy and Nicolas the
straight A student. ;)
When did you start dj'ing?
In 1993 I think.. private parties and stuff (even lame-ass scouts parties),
no D&B back then... but anything from rock to hip hop and techno. Yak! A bit
later it became a mixture of house and breakbeats. When we got more
interested in experimental music, we discovered the likes of Bukem and
Photek. And so on...
If you had to visualize a Juice Blenders set for a deaf friend, what
would you show him?
Hmm, "Juice Blenders, the Movie" hasn't been made so far. But I guess the
images would be quite shocking, then soothing... (like Storm likes to say:
"the rough with the smooth"). No low-res stuff, only high definition,
because we don't play badly produced crap (in Dutch: B-plakken). And we're
also a big fan of that retro-futuristic vibe. All with a sexy touch of
course. So let's say...errr...Kill Bill meets Deep Throat meets Star Trek!
If they want to make a Spinal Tap about DJ's, which personal story
would you tell the director?
No big stories yet. The Blenders are still down-to-earth dudes. Of course we
had our funny moments, like for example playing an unplanned set after
Kosheen (we first did the warm-up), but we were actually too wasted to do
anything. Or that time all the monitors went down on us (the last one
actually fell down the stage), with a 1000 people in front of us. But
besides the usual stuff (loads of prostitutes and cocaine backstage),
nothing special...
The studio is finished, so... when can we expect some finished
productions?
We don't want to rush things. There's a few things on the harddisk, but
we're going to sit on them for a while. I think it would be stupid to
release things if there is no defined sound yet. So first things first, but
we're still aiming for world domination!
Is it mostly hardware-based, or do you work with software?
Well it's all about the software for us; Logic Pro 7 is simply amazing.
Ofcourse, we use a high quality analogue mixer and a proper audio interface
to minimize the less flattering characteristics of the digital environment.
Suppose that in 2005 a label-boss is knocking on your door. What label
would you love your tunes to be picked up by?
Easy: Soul:R! Metalheadz, V Recordings, or Hospital would be fine too. ;)
Hehe, actually it doesn't really matter, a quality tune will always come to
the surface.
We can celebrate 2005 in style on the Mystic New Year's Eve bash. What
can we expect from the Mystic parties in the next year?
As far as names are concerned, no fixed plans yet. But roughly put, we would
like to do a fat party before the summer, in the summer, and after the
summer.
Where do you see yourself in 2010? Any big dreams you want to accomplish?
It would be superb if we made good tunes, that we like ourselves as well as
the people we admire. If we could squeeze a buck out of that, we wouldn't
mind of course. Once in a while a gig abroad would be smashing too.
Hopefully this scene is still going strong then...
Any last words?
Kids, say no to fasco's! (And say no to B-plakken!)
