Wim Verstraeten

Starting out as an industrial photographer, Wim Verstraeten soon turned his attention to aerial photography. He has been flying balloons for the last 20 years.

He heads "Balloon Promotions", a hot-air balloon company that has so far given a bird's eye view of the earth to over 15,000 people in the course of some 4,000 balloon flights.

  • Alpine flights: Château d'Oex, Switzerland - Italy: yearly since 1983.
  • First balloonexpedition in Tanzania, 1984.
  • Balloonexpedition in South Africa, 1984.
  • First Belgian balloonist to cross the English Channel, 1985.
  • Received as a VIP guest by M. Forbes, Balleroy, France, 1985, 1994.
  • Participant in the world's largest annual balloonmeeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1997.
  • First commercial balloonincentive in Masaï Mara, Kenia, 1988.
  • First balloonmeeting in Sovjet Union (Russia), 1989.
  • World Altitude Record for special shape balloons (Smurf balloon) 8000 m., 1990.
  • Flight over the two highest peaks of the Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, 1990.
  • First team in the Transatlantic Balloon Race among five international teams sponsored by Chrysler, commemorating the 500th birthday of the discovery of the American continent, 1992.
  • Received as a VIP guest by King Hussein of Jordan, 1992.
  • Official audience with His Majesty King Boudewijn of Belgium, 1993.
  • Trans Alpine balloonflight with Astronaut Ing. Dirk Frimout, 1994.
  • World Altitude Record for special shape balloons (Smurf balloon) 9000 m., with dropping of Benji-jumper from 7250 m., 1994
  • First Sky Surf from a hot air balloon at 3500 m., 1995.
  • Balloon and Filmexpedition 'Silkroute' in Turkey under high protection of HRH Prince Laurent of Belgium, 1995.
  • Attempt first non-stop balloonflight around the world, January 1997, Breitling Orbiter from Château D'Oex with Bertrand Piccard.
  • 3rd place 'Independent Belgian Entrepreneur' of 1996, February 1997.
  • Biggest passenger balloon incentive in Europe: over 300 passengers during the air on 1 evening flight (sixty balloons) on the 13th of September 1997.
  • Second attempt non-stop balloonflight around the world, January 1998, Breitling Orbiter II from Château D'Oex with Bertrand Piccard and Andy Elson. Two major absolute world records were set during this flight.
  • First historic balloon flight over Lybia, January 2000.
