Here I find myself holding more top class black metal from The Netherlands.
There were not too many opportunities for our north neighbours to feel
proud of their black metal scene (Liar of Golgotha being in the past
one of the exception), things change now with the international recognition
of bands as Walpurgis Nacht or Sammath. To review «Dodengang»
(which is if I’m right the third full length recorded by the band)
sent me back almost ten years ago when multi-instrumentalist Jan Kruitwagen
sent me the demo tape «De Ruines Fluisteren» for a review
in one of our old paper format issue. Sammath are now a two men band
that is playing black metal with more class than just being old school.
They are not amongst the fastest, most technical or even more extreme
formation of the genre but they deliver the right balance between raw
(old school) Norwegian inspired black metal coupled with the needed
death metal background (somewhere between Mayhem and Marduk). Kruitwagen
did here a very good job and «Dodengang» should stick in
your memories for longer than just for a while. The sound is dark and
full of hatred and once you get familiar with the sound of Sammath (I
mean multiple rhythm changes and structures within one single song)
you will find yourself in the mid of a real black metal magnificence.
«Dodengang» convinces thanks to its great atmosphere and
musical depth! Proficiaat.
