#Harney, Martin P, SJ.  The Catholic Church Through the Ages. Boston, Daughters of St Paul, 1974.  Good, balanced, short.

#Herrin, Judith. The Formation of Christendom. Princeton, Princeton U Press, 1987.  Covers the period prior to 800. Her interest is especially in the diversity within Christianity, and the relations between Church and state in the context of that diversity.

#Jedin, Hubert, general ed. History of the Church.  10 volumes.  Trans fr German (Herder, 1962) New York, Crossroad, 1986. Also tends to focus on the most overtly institutional aspects.

#Johnson, Paul. A History of Christianity. New York, Atheneum, 1987.  Popular, rather cynical, sometimes inaccurate, but lots of fun.
