The main purpose of this site is to present a comprehensive up-to-date discussion of the Franck-Hertz experiment. Untangling all the physics in this extraordinarily elegant demonstration of quantum mechanics has always been a problem. Textbook explanations of both the standard version, and the alternative setup arranged for showing higher critical potentials, ignore the intricacies and multifaceted mechanisms taking place in a Franck-Hertz tube and are often misleading and in some respects outright incorrect.

A rigorous analysis in terms of modern kinetic theory in combination with considerations of the underlying plasma phenomena is currently underway. Several independent groups are involved in this research. As yet, the audience of this progress seems to consist entirely of the referees. Hopefully, this site will draw more attention to these efforts. The ultimate goal is to provide physics instructors with a better understanding, to incite them to be more critical of the vast "conventional" literature, and to encourage them to try the alternative version.

Developing this site will take some time. Obviously, remarks and suggestions are desired. The
best way to contact me is by email.

I begin with two reference lists regarding each version.

This will be followed by

Standard F-H experiment
Alternative F-H experiment

Personal stuff.
