Build your own acoustic jungle

Our environment is filled with noise. Our intuitive reaction is either to close all windows (of our room/ of our mind) or to cover it by loud music. We are missing a refreshed sensibility for sound in the environment. However, our surroundings are not entirely filled with 'noise' : it re-opens our "modern" ears for the dynamic live and interaction between sound and environment.

Focusing on the interaction between human and acoustic environment, Felix Hahn, Miki Yui and Ralf Schreiber are three young artists (Academy of Media Arts in Cologne): they designed acoustic modules (sets) with subtle sounds triggered by light and audio signals. Each acoustic module gives subtle signals and pulses to the environment. Changing light condition affects the quality and level of the emitted frequencies. Signals of grouped modules interfere amongst themselves and with the sounds of the environment. Sounds are produced through sampling technique (short loops of 30 seconds). These acoustic modules playback continuously on very quiet level, so that it doesn't irritate you. Piezo speakers emit the sound with a crystal like soundquality sending a new pulse to the environment. Connected to an audio mixer, they can even be used as an music instrument (in a dj set-up).
